In the AI world, there's no such thing as 'job hopping'—only 'aligning with a faction': What Karpathy joining Anthropic truly means

Karpathy's move from OpenAI to Tesla, back to OpenAI, and now to Anthropic isn't just a standard career change. In the AI industry, these transitions aren't about changing jobs—they're about choosing which vision of AI to bring to the world first.

Karpathy joining Anthropic isn't just a job change—it's a change of camp.

OpenAI → Tesla → OpenAI → Anthropic. If you look at this path as merely a career move, you are missing half the story.

In my experience working in global sales, watching where top researchers move is often a signal 6 to 12 months in advance of which technology direction buyers will choose. I once had a deal collapse right before signing because the buyer suddenly changed their tech stack. Looking back, the buyer's CTO had been following researchers who had already shifted their focus in that direction months prior.

These days, I check researchers' Twitter activity and co-authored papers before I look at LinkedIn job postings. It provides a much faster roadmap of where the industry is headed.

What is your take on Karpathy's choice? Do you see it as a signal that the weight of the industry is shifting toward AI safety, or is it just a personal decision?
